Dr-to-be Angelique Thomas awarded two scholarships to support her PhD with HEY BABY

10/02/2022

Dr-to-be Angelique Thomas, who is conducting her PhD with the HEY BABY team, was awarded the Canon Collins Tom Queba Scholarship for Social Change, 2022.

Canon Collins Trust is building a community of change agents across southern Africa who create and use research for social impact. Through their scholarship programmes and research funding, project grants and international events programme, their unique approach cultivates a space where activism and research meet.

The scholarship will support Angelique in conducting important research into how to support young women living with HIV - 80% of all infections amongst adolescent girls and young women occur in sub-Saharan Africa, and most often through heterosexual relationships. The study will employ mixed methodologies in the context of COVID-19 and the sample will include women living with HIV and their partners based in the Western Cape, South Africa. This exciting and valuable work will transform our understanding of the sexual experiences of young women in the context of HIV and explore the importance of re-imagining the sexual and reproductive health of young women, advocating for integrative research on risk and resilience in adolescent development.

Research Topic: ‘Reimagining sexual and reproductive health in an exploratory study with young women living with HIV and their partners in the Eastern and Western Cape, South Africa’

Additionally, Angelique was also awarded a scholarship for the Orange Knowledge Programme, funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The programme contributes to societies’ social and economic development by strengthening knowledge and skills of professionals and organisations.

Angelique will be attending the Advance Summer Institute on Sexuality, Culture and Society - a 4-week Summer Institute at the University of Amsterdam, Netherlands from July 8th - August 8th 2022.

Through this opportunity Angelique will use this space to develop her understanding and experience in the area of sexuality studies, particularly in the Global South, which she will apply to her doctoral research and work with the hey baby study.
