Preventing and Responding to Vulnerabilities: Insights from a longitudinal study with adolescent mothers in the Eastern Cape

  • Mental health is an important intervention component for adolescents living with or affected by HIV.

  • Research shows a bidirectional relationship between HIV and mental health, with links between poor mental health and increased risk-inducing reproductive and sexual health.

  • Research studies with adolescent population groups, specifically among those living in HIV endemic communities, are often faced with the need to provide some form of participant psychosocial support, regardless of the study objectives. As such, referral protocols are essential.

  • However, this can be challenging, particularly in low-resource settings.
